Pink beach

Some of Indonesia’s pink sand beaches are located in the Komodo National Park, a cluster of lesser sunda islands in the center of Indonesia. This pink beach on Komodo Island has become famous for its light reddish sand color and clear turquoise water.

The closest city to get there is the fishing town of Labuan Bajo in Flores, which has its own airport (It is about one hour flight from Bali) and plenty of hotels and restaurants as an accommodation to enjoy during visits to the park. It is pretty easy to visit on a day trip or take a liveaboard sail from the town of Labuan Bajo on Flores Island.

Komodo National Park has several pink sand beach spots in the park area, like Komodo pink beach and Namo Beach at Komodo Island, Padar pink beach at Padar Island, and Serai pink beach, located on a hidden bay between Rinca and Padar Island. One of the most famous and most visited is the pink beach at Padar Island.

A pink sand beach in general is very rare, and there are only a handful of them worldwide. They’re even rarer than black beaches. And why is the sand pink? Pink beaches seemingly get their color from foraminifera, which are microscopic red organisms that live in the coral reefs and get washed up on the beach. The pink color is more noticeable on the pink sand beach at Serai and Padar Island.

Our recommendation, if you want to enjoy the pink sand and the beauty of the reef corals, should you visit two or three pink beach locations. Enjoy the pink sand at Serai or Padar Island and the beauty of the coral reef at the pink beach of Komodo Island. Snorkeling or diving is enough to enjoy them.
